Tintri Cloud Connector: enable hybrid cloud services by tying Tintri to AWS and IBM Cloud Object Storage

Jump-start hybrid cloud services by tying Tintri to AWS and IBM Cloud Object Storage.

  • KEY TAKEAWAYS
  • The new Tintri Cloud Connector fits right into your DP/DR strategy, extending on-premises Tintri to public cloud, while providing primary and secondary on-premises infrastructure.
  • Because Tintri operates solely in virtual machines and containers, recovering data is super-efficient. You restore just the data needed.
  • It's not just about brand partnerships. By leading with the S3 protocol and connecting to AWS and IBM, Tintri helps you mobilize your on-prem and public cloud deployments.

We believe that the modern data center will be part of a multi-cloud model. Organizations will run multiple on-premises private clouds and public clouds simultaneously. That’s why it’s imperative that Tintri’s Enterprise Cloud platform be tightly integrated with public cloud.

Today, Tintri launches our Cloud Connector, which ties an on-premises Tintri footprint to either AWS or IBM Cloud Object Storage.

Tintri Cloud Connector takes advantage of our per-VM data transfer, de-dupe and compression abilities, making it the most efficient way to store data in the cloud. ESG’s preliminary analysis shows that compared to traditional systems, Tintri Cloud Connector can:

  • Lower administrative costs by about 72%
  • Lower cloud storage and data egress costs by an estimated 80-88%
  • Get up to 4X lower RPO/RTO

We know Tintri is not the first (nor the last) platform to introduce public cloud connectivity. But we’re not rolling out this functionality to check a box—we’ve built our Connector based on how customers will use it. Let’s explore three things that clearly differentiate our Cloud Connector:

1. Data protection.

The Cloud Connector fits right into an organization’s broader data protection and disaster recovery strategy. With Tintri as primary storage system, an organization can now extend on-premises Tintri to public cloud, in addition to Tintri providing primary and secondary on-premises infrastructure. We’re offering our customers secondary storage economics with Tintri’s unique capabilities.

See the screenshot below as an example of how easy Tintri makes it to manage data protection. With one interface, you can configure policies with any schedule, retention period, and replication target.

2. Abstraction.

When considering backup to public cloud, it’s important to think about efficiency (to reduce costs and speed recovery). Tintri snapshots are space-efficient with inline deduplication and compression—only changed data are sent over the WAN. Tintri Cloud Connector minimizes HTTP requests such as GET and PUT to reduce public cloud access charges.

And because Tintri operates solely in virtual machines and containers, you’re not moving unnecessary bulk between on-premises and public cloud. When you’re recovering data and applications after an outage, this granular abstraction lets you restore just the data needed (file-level restore).

That means you can work with far more agility and speed when every minute matters to your operations.

3. Public cloud.

It’s not just about brand partnerships to us. By leading with the S3 protocol and connecting to AWS and IBM, we’ve got a product that helps customers mobilize their on-premises and public cloud deployments. So if AWS or IBM is part of your strategy, Tintri can be your on-premises complement.

Now, we’ve been clear (and cheeky) in our position that not all applications belong in public (if you haven’t seen our video series and want a laugh, watch here). But we will readily admit that there are plenty of reasons why organizations need an easy and effective way to connect their enterprise cloud and other clouds. And that’s why we’ve thought through the development and application of Cloud Connector.
